Dixon apologizes to Williams for missing their scheduled meet-up and spends the next several hours hanging around the salvage yard and doing odd jobs with the employees.ġ1:00 PM: Dixon tells Williams he is going to call home, but subsequently leaves the salvage yard without telling him and does not return home that night.ġ1:00 AM: Dixon’s abandoned pick-up truck is discovered at the Quality Oil Company truck stop on U.S. ![]() ![]() According to one of the owners, Bob Williams, Dixon had told them he recently purchased some junked cars and was planning to meet them at the salvage yard earlier that morning, so they could go pick the cars up. However, Gary does not show up for the meeting at all and is never heard from again.ĥ:00 PM: Dixon shows up at Bob’s Salvage Yard in Independence, Missouri, where he is friends with the owners. When Burcham asks Dixon if he would like to open up an account, Dixon says he needs to pay off some debts and receives the entire $30,000 in cash.ġ2:45 PM: Burcham’s secretary receives a phone call from Gary, who says he will be a little late for the 1:00 meeting with the McKee Oil representative. He later says he did not detect anything unusual from Gary on the phone.ġ2:30 PM: Dixon shows up at the bank with a $30,000 cheque containing Gary’s signature. Since Gary is a friend of Burcham’s and one of the bank’s top customers, Burcham agrees to the request. Gary says he will not be present, but wants to grant his approval for Dixon to cash the cheque. Gary asks Burcham if they can postpone the meeting until 1:00 PM and the McKee representative agrees.ġ1:00 AM: Dixon shows up at Gary’s office to retrieve the $30,000 cheque from his secretary and tells her he will be meeting up with Gary again to get his signature on it.ġ1:30 AM: The owner of a truck stop located ten miles from Gary’s office claims that he sees Gary there and he is pacing back and forth and appears to be waiting for someone.ġ2:00 PM: Burcham receives another call at the bank from Gary, who informs him that a man named Tom Dixon will be arriving shortly with a $30,000 cheque he received for the purchase of a horse. He was scheduled to have a meeting there with a representative from the McKee Oil Company, as Gary had completed a business deal with them and was set to receive a payment of over $100,000. ![]() Thomas Burcham, the president of the Santa Fe Trail Bank. Here’s a timeline of the events over the next two days…ġ0:15 AM: Gary leaves his office with Dixon and while he doesn’t tell his secretary where they’re going, he says they’ll probably be back within an hour.ġ0:30 AM: Gary’s secretary receives a phone call from him, where he instructs her to make out a $30,000 cheque to Tom Dixon, which he’ll picking up shortly. He claimed he was acting as an agent for a man who was selling a pure-bred Appaloosa horse for $30,000 and Gary was interested in purchasing it. Dixon lived with his family in the unincorporated community of Stilwell and was known for working various jobs, such as a painter, contractor and carnival operator. On the morning of October 15, Gary had a meeting at his office with a 42-year old man named Tom Dixon, whom he had spoken with on the phone the previous day. Gary also had a devout interest in horse trading, as he owned and raised 23 horses on his ranch. He was the owner of Simmons Petroleum Corporation, which operated a chain of independent gas stations in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. In 1974, 32-year old Gary Simmons was a businessman who lived with his wife, Nancy, and two children on a ranch outside Overland Park, Kansas.
